What Is Art Therapy?

  • Art therapy is a master’s level mental health profession that incorporates art-making and creativity as a therapeutic and healing process.

  • Arts therapist serves as an empathic listener and observer who offer guidance in a variety of challenges including; mental illness, trauma, loss, substance abuse and eating disorders.

  • Art therapy can be used as a tool for reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation by entering flow state and releasing emotional tension through self-expression so that we can be less reactive and more responsive in our lives.

  • Art therapy provides a safe space to express difficult feelings with the gentle, non-judgmental support of an art therapist.

  • When we allow difficult feelings to emerge through images, we are able to gain awareness on the root of those problems through the processing of the artwork. Self-awareness opens the doorway for change to occur.

  • There is no wrong or right in art therapy, and it does not require any prior artistic training.

  • Art therapy practice requires knowledge of visual art (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art forms) and the creative process, as well as of human development, psychological, and counseling theories and techniques.

  • Through the open-hearted playfulness of creativity, we learn to trust our intuition and access our inner guide.

Welcome!

I am an artist, educator and art therapist but above all, I am human, and my mission in life is to help other humans discover a deeper love and understanding of themselves through the healing powers of creative self-expression, mindfulness, and connection to Mother Earth.

I aim to mend the disconnect between mind, body and spirit by inviting play, curiosity, embodiment, and devotion to the divine creator within each of us. I teach people how to become aware of sabotaging behaviors and limiting beliefs so they can reclaim their true sense of self.

I utilize an expressive arts approach – including visual arts, music, dance/movement, and journaling combined with meditation, mindfulness and traditional talk therapy. Together, we’ll paint, draw, sculpt, collage, and explore other forms of creativity. It’s ok if you are not sure how to, I will guide you. When we work together, there is no right or wrong way to express yourself and there is no prior artistic training required.

I am here to take you on a creative journey of self-exploration and personal growth, to help you gain a deeper connection to your intuitive self and the world around you by tapping into your hidden creative wisdom.

I offer Fundamentals of Therapeutic Arts Online Trainings, individual online sessionsin-person workshops, and I run an in-person Women’s Art Therapy Group in Asheville, NC. I use a holistic approach to wellness and a playful ‘person first’ approach to therapy.
